Udawalawe National park is undoubtedly the best place to see wild Asian Elephants throughout the year. Udawalawe National Park is unique in terms of consistency in numbers of elephants roaming the park. It has no a seasonal variation in herds of elephants. Species recorded from the park include 94 plants, 12 amphibians, 21 fish, 33 reptiles, 184 birds, and 43 mammals. Additionally 135 species of butterflies are among the invertebrates found in Udawalawe.

The main attraction of the park are Water Buffalo, Wild boar, Spotted Deer, Samber Deer, Jackal, Black-naped hare, bandicoots, mongooses, foxes, the endemic Toque Macaque and Gray Langers. If you are lucky Sighting Leopard and other smaller cats like Fishing cat & Jungle cat can be seen.

The endemic species of bird called Red Faced Malkoha has its favourite habitat in the 195 square km parkland. Hawk Eagles, Serpent Eagles, Black Eagles, Black Capped Bulbuls, Racket Tailed Drongos, Malabar Pied Horn Bills, White Bellied Sea Eagles, White Necked Storks, Ibis, Shama - The forest Nightingale, Open Bills, Strol Billed Kin Fishers and peacocks. Among the migrant birds are the forest wagtails, Indian Pitta, Whiskered Terns, Osprey Sand Pipers and Terns.

Satin trees that abound in the park attract butterflies. Attractive Banded Peacock, Common Jezebel, Common Indian Crow and many species of ‘Yellows and Whites’ Common Mormon. In the revering forest areas Common Blue-bottle are seen.

While the crocodiles doze off on the banks of the reservoir, the water monitor lizards are abounding in the park.

The best hours to visit the park are in the mornings and evenings. Late evening also affords the photographic opportunities in the backdrop of loveliest sunsets.
