Madu ganga has a high ecological and biological significance, declared as a RAMSAR world heritage virgin wetland in 2003 and acknowledgement as the second large wetland in Sri Lanka. It is home to over 300 plant species from 95 families and 250 plus vertebrate families. It might be one of the last remaining tracts of pristine mangrove forests in Sri Lanka. Mangroves nets large number of water monitors king fisher’s, wood peckers, Megalaima rubricapilla, Black – hooded oriole and large number of birds in flocks. On your way you also will see a fish breeding center in the middle of the river.

The famed temple where the higher ordination was carried out on a barge in 1803 of the Buddhist Amarapura nikaya sect can be seen, along the famous Kothduwa monastery.

A rickety black-bridge serves the community in one of the larger islands of Madu ganaga, the main livelihood of these inhabitants are peeling cinnamon and making cinnamon oil, while on excursion the sight of darting Brahmin kites and majestic swoops of the Sea eagles down on to the water is a site to behold. In your journey you will be able to see some traditional fisherman and traditional fishing kraals ( ja kotu) set up to trap lagoon prawns.
